Individuelle Perspektiven

Individual Perspectives

The increasing prosperity of the middle class resulting from industrialization led to a boom in the art market at the end of the 19th century. At the same time the younger generation of artists became increasingly critical of sales oriented "popular art". They deplored the well-established genre and history painting as trivial and pandering to popular taste. Arnold Böcklin, Anselm Feuerbach and Hans von Marées set their sights on a new Idealism. Impressionism and Realism broke through the canon of academic art. The Secession, which distanced itself from the official art scene, promoted individuality and a diversity of artistic expression. Impressionism, which was considered French, was vilified as "Foreign Stuff" by the virulent nationalism of the German Empire of 1871.
