Reichsgründung
Nach dem Sieg gegen Frankreich wurde das stolze Bild "nationaler Einheit" 1871 mit der Proklamation eines deutschen Kaisers in Form der "kleindeutschen Lösung" (ohne Österreich) besiegelt. Das Deutsche Reich war nicht der 1848/49 von unten" angestrebte Nationalstaat, sondern ein Bund deutscher Fürsten unter preußischer Vormacht. Sein Industriepotential machte es zu einem Machtfaktor innerhalb der europäischen Groß und Weltmächte. Trotz obrigkeitsstaatlicher Verfassung wurden Nationalismus und Massendemokratie zu Leitmotiven politischer Prozesse. Der Historismus wurde Träger eines Reichsnationalismus. Gemälde wie Pilotys "Thusnelda im Triumphzug des Germanicus" sollten den Betrachter zu vermeintlichen historischen Wurzeln von "Größe und Stärke" der deutschen Nation führen.
Founding of the Empire
Following the victory over France the proud image of "national unity" was sealed in 1871 with the proclamation of a German Emperor in the form of the "Lesser German solution" (without Austria). The German Empire was not the national state sought "from below" in 1848/49, but rather an alliance of German princes under Prussian hegemony. Its industrial potential made it a power factor among the major nations of Europe and the world. Despite its authoritarian constitution, nationalism and mass democracy became the leitmotifs of political processes. Historicism became the vehicle for imperial nationalism. Paintings such as Piloty's "Thusnelda in the Triumphal Procession of Germanicus" were intended to remind the viewer of the supposedly historical roots of the "Greatness and Strength" of the German Nation.
