Since the early 1890s there had been rumblings of discontent at the Genossenschaft bildender Künstler Wiens, the official professional organization for Vienna's artists. A group of young members were dissatisfied with its conservative exhibition policies and, led by Gustav Klimt, in 1897 they founded a new association of artists: the Secession. It aimed to exhibit the international avant-garde in Vienna in order to promote Viennese art and educate the public. Artists like Fernand Khnopff, Auguste Rodin, Giovanni Segantini, Jan Toorop, and Max Klinger achieved their international breakthrough at the Vienna Secession. For the first time, exhibitions charted the development of Impressionism and Pointillism. A gesamtkunstwerk, or "total work of art", combined fine and applied art and also encompassed music, theater, and dance.
