Das Gemälde gehörte zu einer Serie von vier Porträts junger Adliger. Wie im 16. Jh. für Kinderbildnisse üblich, ist der 13-Jährige wie ein Erwachsener präsentiert. Um den Hals trägt er eine Gefäßflöte. Dieses Autoritätssymbol wurde auf der Jagd und bei Hofe verwendet.

The painting belonged to a series of four portraits of young nobles. The 13-year-old boy is presented as an adult, the conventional treatment of children's portraits in the 16th c. He is wearing a fipple flute around his neck. This symbol of authority was used in hunting and at court.
