Plates used in the decorative arts as mold models for metal work were regarded by collectors as autonomous small-scale artworks. They could be found as lead molds in numerous art cabinets and collections. Plates fashioned out of precious metal were rarer.
The Nuremberg merchant Paulus Praun II (1548-1616) assembled a notable art collection of around 10,000 objects. The focus lay on paintings, sculptures, prints, Antique coins and cameos. However, the collection also comprised books, decorative arts, natural phenomena, exotic curiosities and documents of family history. Only a few of the works sold in 1801 and scattered to the four winds can still be found in European collections, including those shown here.
