Van Dyck painted this altar picture for the chapel in the House of Vows of the Jesuit Lay Brotherhood of Celibate Men in Ant werp, of which he was a member. The theme is also Jesuit: Saint Rosalie receives the rosary, the leading apostles Peter and Paul are on each side of the Madonna: veneration of the Virgin Mary, loyalty to Rome and the Pope, and trust in the mediating function of the saints are all central concerns of this Counter-Reformation Order.
