Heiliger Ambrosius

Among the painters that Master Theodoricus invited to collaborate with him at the Karlštejn Castle were some exceptional personalities, the work of which prepared the way for the Prague painterly style developed in the 1370s. Apart from the striking group of paintings by Theodoricus or influenced by him, there are thus also panels in the Chapel of the Holy Cross in Karlštejn that differ principally in the technologies used. This applies fully to the paintings of the Church Fathers. Traditionally they have been ascribed to Theodoricus but in the simplicity of the colour layers, they deviate from the main group of paintings into such extent that now they will have to be listed instead as works by an unknown. perhaps Prague-based master.

Mezi malíři, které Theodorik přizval ke spolupráci na Karlštejně, byly i zcela výjimečné osobnosti, jejichž tvorba již připravovala vývoj pražského malířství sedmdesátých let 14. století. Vedle výrazné skupiny Theodorikových či Theodorikem ovlivněných maleb se tak v karlštejnské kapli objevují obrazy, které se zásadně liší také v technologii. To platí zcela o obrazech cirkevních Otců, tradičně spojovaných se jménem Theodorika. Jednoduchostí výstavby barevné vrstvy se však od hlavní skupiny odlišují natolik, že budou muset být napříště uváděny spíše jako dílo neznámého, snad pražského malíře.

Milánský biskup sv. Ambrož (kolem 340-397), patřici do skupiny čtyř západních cirkevních Otců, byl znám především jako autor církevních hymnů.
