St Gregory the Great (around 540-604) is one of the Western Church Fathers. He wrote a number of theological treatises and sermons and is therefore depicted - similarly to other Fathers (St Jerome, St Augustine, St Ambrose) - at a lectern. The detailed and faithful representation of the writing utensils as a still life shows the possibilities of later development in painting which we can see in the Netherlandish painting of the early 15th century.
Sv. papež Řehoř Veliký (kolem 540-604) patří ke skupině západních církevních Otců. Napsal řadu teologických pojednání a kázání, a je proto zobrazován stejně jako ostatní Otcové (sv. Jeroným, sv. Augustin, sv. Ambrož) u pulpitu. Detailní a věrné zobrazení zátiší s písařským náčiním ukazuje další možnosti vývoje malířské tvorby, jak vidíme na příkladu nizozemského malířství počátku 15. století.
