Bozzetti

Bozzetti

Alongside drawings, three-dimensional sketches - bozzetti - were part of the process of making large scale sculptures. Johann Baptist Straub's two putti are preliminary studies for attendants of the archangels Raphael and Gabriel, to whom they were assigned as attributes. Today, the completed works are still on the high altar of St Michael in Berg am Laim. Straub and his colleague Roman Anton Boos also modelled clay sketches for the reliefs and monumental figures on the façade of the Theatinerkirche in Munich. The grid lines on the apostle reliefs allowed the compositions to be enlarged.
