Meleager und Atalante

Wie viele andere Werke von Rubens illustriert dieses Gemälde eine Geschichte aus den Metamorphosen des römischen Dichters Ovid (vollendet 8 n. Chr.). Meleager hat einen monströsen Eber getötet und präsentiert seinen Kopf Atalanta, in die er sich verliebt hat. Im Hintergrund ist eine schlangenhaarige Furie zu sehen – ein Hinweis auf die anschließende Fehde um die Haut des Ebers, die zum Tod Meleagers führen wird. Obwohl das Bild ein hervorragendes Beispiel für Rubens' Darstellung kräftiger, fleischiger Körper ist, ist es nicht durchweg in gutem Zustand. Teile sind berieben und die Drapierung über der rechten Schulter Meleagers wurde anhand einer Werkstattkopie rekonstruiert.

Like many of Rubens's other works, this painting illustrates a story from the Metamorphoses of the Roman poet Ovid (completed 8 A.D.). Meleager has killed a monstrous boar and presents its head to Atalanta, with whom he has fallen in love. In the background is a snake-haired Fury-a reference to the subsequent feuding over the boar's hide that will lead to Meleager's death. Although a splendid example of Rubens's depiction of substantial, fleshy bodies, the picture is not in uniformly good condition. Parts are abraded and the drapery over the right shoulder of Meleager has been reconstructed on the basis of a workshop copy.
