Dieses bekannteste Gemälde von Bonheur zeigt den Pferdemarkt in Paris auf dem von Bäumen gesäumten Boulevard de l'Hôpital, in der Nähe der Anstalt Salpêtrière, die im linken Hintergrund zu sehen ist. Eineinhalb Jahre lang zeichnete Bonheur dort zweimal pro Woche und verkleidete sich als Mann, um die Aufmerksamkeit abzuschrecken. Bonheur war als Tiermaler gut etabliert, als das Gemälde 1853 im Pariser Salon erstmals gezeigt wurde und dort großes Lob erhielt. Bei der endgültigen Gestaltung ließ sich die Künstlerin von George Stubbs, Théodore Gericault, Eugène Delacroix und der antiken griechischen Skulptur inspirieren: Sie bezeichnete die Pferdemesse als ihren eigenen „Parthenonfries“.

For a year and a half Bonheur sketched there twice a week, dressing as a man to discourage attention. Bonheur was well established as an animal painter when the painting debuted at the Paris Salon of 1853, where it received wide praise. In arriving at the final scheme, the artist drew inspiration from George Stubbs, Théodore Gericault, Eugène Delacroix, and ancient Greek sculpture: she referred to The Horse Fair as her own "Parthenon frieze."
