The twist of Mary's torso and her arm extending across her breast are bold artistic devices for creating a greater spatial dimension. The outline of the figure, which widens towards the base, an outer garment draped like an apron and accentuated gestures are some of the formal principles of the masons' lodge then working on the St. Sebald Church. Jesus' gesture of playing with his mother's crown reflects childlike spontaneity. At the same time it is the expression of great veneration: It alludes to Christ's coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven.
