The monumental sculpture comes from the Collegiate Church of St. Maria im Kapitol in Cologne. It probably served as a cross atop a triumphal arch. The diagonal position of the body and the raised right arm become standard features of Cologne crucifixes modeled on the Gero cross made around 970. The gestures illustrate the preceding suffering and death. The head, which was made later, shows the influence of the classic cathedral sculpture of northern France.
