From Material to Volume
The surface of a work of art can be compared to the skin of a body. The underlying structure is usually hidden from the viewer. Last but not least the material determines the appearance of a work. A lot depends on it: the structure of the surface, the impression of heaviness or lightness, the colour of the material itself.
An essential factor is how the chosen material affects the creation of volume. Metal can be bent or welded. Wood is split, sawn, planed. Fabrics or foils of plastic can be folded or stretched. Each material contains different possibilities to create three-dimensionality, i.e. volume. A comparison of art and design shows that designers often work on the same issues as artists.
