Der in London geborene Molijn trat 1616 der Haarlemer Malergilde bei. Zusammen mit seinen etwas jüngeren Zeitgenossen Jan van Goyen und Salomon van Ruysdael begründete er den neuen tonalen Landschaftsstil, der charakteristisch für die Haarlemer Schule wurde. Molijns bestes Werk stammt aus der Zeit um 1626–29. Dieses Bild veranschaulicht seine geschickte Anwendung barocker Kompositionstechniken auf die lokale Topographie.

Born in London, Molijn joined the painter's guild at Haarlem in 1616. Together with his slightly younger contemporaries Jan van Goyen and Salomon van Ruysdael he established the new tonal landscape style that became characteristic of the Haarlem school. Molijn's best work dates from around 1626-29. This picture illustrates his deft application of Baroque compositional devices to local topography.
