Millet malte heroische Landschaften in der Tradition Nicolas Poussins und Gaspard Dughets. Den Konventionen klassischer Landschaftsmalerei entsprechend, wird das Auge behutsam durch die ausgewogene Komposition in die Tiefe geführt. Im Vordergrund trifft ein den Weg herabschreitendes Paar auf einen sitzenden, halbnackten Mann - ob es sich bei diesem wirklich um Diogenes handelt, wie vermutet wurde, bleibt ungewiss.

Classical Landscape

Millet painted heroic landscapes in the tradition of Nicolas Poussin and Gaspard Dughet. In keeping with the convention of classical landscape painting the eye is carefully drawn into the distance through the balanced composition. In the foreground a couple walks past a seated, semi-naked man. Whether this is really Diogenes, as has been presumed, remains uncertain.
