Votivtafel des Kašpar Kašpárek

The Madonna with grapes on the panel from Plzeň is based on the iconographical and compositional prototypes of the Saxon painter Lucas Cranach the Elder. The motive of a grape refers to the Eucharist meaning - it is the allusion on the future sacrifice of Christ on the Cross. The votive function of the panel is explained by the Latin inscription mentioning also the date, when Kaspar Kašpárek, a burgher of Plzeň, commissioned the work; on the ledge on the right there is the artist's signature - I W, 1538. The monogram IW appears also on other works of this anonymous artist, who probably apprenticed in Lucas Cranach the Elder's workshop in Wittenberg and was afterwords active in Bohemia for a few decades.

Madona s hroznem na plzeňském obraze vychází z ikonografických a kompozičních prototypů dílny saského malíře Lucase Cranacha st. Motiv vinného hroznu - poukaz na eucharistii - Ize chápat jako připomínku budoucí oběti Krista na kříži. Votivní funkci obrazu ozřejmuje latinský text, uvádějící i datum, kdy plzeňský měšťan Kašpar Kašpárek dílo objednal; na římse vpravo je umělcova signatura - IW, 1538. Monogramem IW jsou podepisována také další díla tohoto anonymního malíře, který se pravděpodobně vyučil přímo ve wittenberské dílně Lucase Cranacha st. a následně po několik desetiletí působil v Čechách.
