The emphatic sculptural quality of the figure placed within a restricted space is characteristic of Gossart's innovative approach to portraiture. More dynamic than the nearby Portrait of a Man (32.100.62), this sitter's body rotates toward the viewer as his head turns slightly away, while his hand grasps the hilt of a sword in a moment of suspended action. He is elegantly dressed in the latest fashion. His large beret, angled to reveal a delicate gold-embroidered cap, holds an impressive medallion that alludes to his classical interests.
