Moretto malte dieses bewegende Altarbild kurz vor seinem Tod für das Oratorium einer Bruderschaft in seiner Heimatstadt. Die Restaurierung hat den auffälligen Kontrast zwischen den düsteren Gesichtern der Figuren und dem Morgenlicht offenbart, das über den Himmel und die Landschaft spielt. Die Mitglieder der Gruppe hätten über die Momente nach Christi Tod meditiert und an die tiefe Trauer seiner Mutter und anderer Anhänger gedacht, aber auch an die Aussicht auf ein zukünftiges Leben. Als es das Museum betrat, erinnerten seine Ernsthaftigkeit und seine Erhabenheit einen Kurator an die Musik von Bach oder die Poesie von Milton.

Moretto painted this moving altarpiece just before his death for the oratory of a confraternity in his hometown. Restoration has revealed the striking contrast between the somber faces of the figures and the dawn light playing across the sky and landscape. Members of the group would have meditated on the moments following Christ's death and thought of the piercing grief of his mother and other followers, but also of the promise of life to come. When it entered the museum, its gravity and nobility reminded one curator of the music of Bach or the poetry of Milton.
