Madame Thadée Natanson (Misia Godebska, 1872-1950) im Theater

Lautrec fertigte diese Studie für das Cover der letzten Ausgabe von L'Estampe Originale (1893-95) an, einem vierteljährlich erscheinenden Album mit Originaldrucken junger französischer Künstler. Passenderweise zeigt es Bühnenarbeiter, die den Vorhang einer Aufführung fallen lassen. In der Mitte wacht ein Elefant aus Gips auf einer Kartusche für das Inhaltsverzeichnis. Links sitzt Misia Natanson, die glamouröse Schirmherrin der Dichter Paul Verlaine und Stéphane Mallarmé sowie von Künstlern wie Lautrec, Bonnard und Vuillard. Dieses nun restaurierte Werk wurde einst in zwei Teile geschnitten und gerahmt, sodass nur Misia in ihrer Loge sichtbar ist.

Lautrec made this study for the cover of the final issue of L'Estampe Originale (1893-95), a quarterly album of original prints by young French artists. Fittingly, it shows stagehands bringing down the curtain on a performance. In the middle, a plaster elephant stands guard atop a cartouche for the table of contents. Seated at left is Misia Natanson, the glamorous patroness of poets Paul Verlaine and Stéphane Mallarmé, and of artists including Lautrec, Bonnard, and Vuillard. Now restored, this work was once sliced into two pieces and framed so as to reveal only Misia in her loge.
