Die Samariterin am Brunnen

The artist's name, Giuseppe Vermiglio, can be identified from the inscription on the stone at the bottom centre the canvas. Vermiglio returned to Piedmont in 1626 after having lived in Rome for a few decades, where he studied the new art movements, commencing with Caravaggio and his disciples. The figures depicted on this large canvas are life-sized. On the left, Christ, who is sat leaning against the well, gazing at the young woman on the right, requesting some water from her. In the background, there is a glimpse of the city of Sychar in the centre, while the Apostles on the left, emerging from the woods to observe the scene. The canvas, which originally adorned the refectory and then the sacristy of the Santa Maria di Castello church in Alessandria, was purchased for the Galleria Sabauda in 1839.

L'iscrizione sulla pietra in basso al centro consente di identificare l'autore del dipinto, Giuseppe Vermiglio, che nel 1626 era ormai rientrato in Piemonte dopo aver soggiornato per qualche decennio a Roma, dove aveva studiato le nuove tendenze artistiche sviluppatesi a partire da Caravaggio e dai suoi seguaci. Le grandi dimensioni della tela consentirono al pittore di raffigurare i personaggi a grandezza naturale. Sulla sinistra Cristo seduto e poggiato al pozzo rivolge lo sguardo alla giovane donna a destra, chiedendole un po' d'acqua. Sullo sfondo, al centro, si scorge la città di Sichar, mentre a sinistra gli apostoli osservano la scena, emergendo dal bosco. La tela, che in origine ornava il refettorio e poi la sacrestia della chiesa di Santa Maria di Castello di Alessandria, fu acquistata per la Reale Galleria nel 1839.
