Mrs Oswald

Mary Ramsay, the only child of a Glasgow merchant who settled in Jamaica, married Richard Oswald in 1750. They derived their considerable wealth from a trading empire that included estates and enslaved people in the Americas. Zoffany almost certainly painted Mary in his London studio, inventing the landscape behind her.
