Lord Ribblesdale

Sargent was famous for his stylish society portraits. He moved to London in 1884, where he painted Thomas Lister, 4th Baron Ribblesdale in the British tradition of full length portraiture. Dressed in hunting clothes, the sitter's elegant, elongated figure is reinforced by the upright classical pilaster behind, while his hand on hip, cocked top hat and jaunty neck-tie lend an informal and confident swagger.
