Marsyas and Olympus

Marsyas instructs Olympus in playing the pipes. Marsyas was a satyr and a skilful musician. The figures are based on antique works of art in the collection of Carracci's patrons in Rome, the Farnese family. The painting probably formed the lid of a keyboard instrument made for the Roman scholar Fulvio Orsini.
