The countess and the lawyer Silvertongue have met secretly in a bagnio (an establishment offering rooms to illicit couples). The earl has discovered the pair in a state of undress. Silvertongue has fatally stabbed the earl and is escaping through the window (left) as the night-watchmen arrive at the door.
