Portrait of Caroline Amelia Elizabeth of Brunswick
Caroline of Brunswick was the estranged wife of the Prince of Wales, later George IV. This portrait was painted after the couple's acrimonious separation in 1796: her left hand and wedding ring are concealed in deep shadow. The modelling tool in her other hand and the clay bust of her father allude to the Princess's skill as a sculptor. It was rumoured that she and Sir Thomas Lawrence were lovers.
