Mr and Mrs Thomas Coltman

Thomas Coltman was a friend of the artist, although 13 years his junior. He married his first wife Mary Barlow in 1769. The riding dress of the couple is minutely observed: Thomas Coltman's tight breeches reveal the outline of a coin in an inner pocket.
