The Skiff (La Yole)

Rowing boats, sailboats and steam trains crossing bridges were favourite motifs of the Impressionists. Renoir combines all three in this iridescent summer scene. It was probably painted at Chatou, a suburb on the Seine to the west of Paris that was associated with boating and frequented by Renoir.
