The Drunkard, Zarauz (El Borracho, Zarauz)

Five drinkers gather in a tavern in Zarauz, the Basque town where Sorolla spent the summer of 1910. One man, more drunk than the others, stares through watery eyes at the artist. This large-scale, freely-painted sketch shows Sorolla exploring a peasant theme and a dark, distinctively Spanish palette for the first time in a decade.
