Gauguin painted this still life in homage to a work by Paul Cézanne that he had acquired almost 10 years earlier. The knife and the treatment of the fruit reflect Cézanne's composition. Other elements, such as the Breton tankard, are reminders of the remote area of western France that Gauguin had been visiting since 1886.
