The Magdalen

Mary Magdalene wears a magnificent patterned dress of cloth of gold trimmed with fur. She carries the traditional attribute of the ointment jar with which she anointed the dead Christ. The elaborate gold vessel is decorated with figures in antique style. One of these is the nude figure of the god Mercury wearing his winged hat and carrying his staff or caduceus.
