Two distinctive badges hang from the man's golden chain, and tell us a lot about the unknown sitter. That of the Virgin and Child indicates he belonged to the religious confraternity of Our Lady of the Swan, a religious group that only admitted members of the nobility. His fish and falcon badge shows he was a member of a jousting company in Swabia, south Germany.
