Carriera's ability to blend pastel crayons and create rich textures made her one of the most celebrated artists of her day. The sophisticated modelling of the young man's face, wig and costume creates the soft, velvety effect for which her pastels were famed. Although Carriera had an international clientele, this sitter is probably Venetian, as is the frame which is most likely original.
