Peasants by a Ruined Aqueduct

This picture shows a landscape inspired by the countryside near Rome, with the remains of an ancient aqueduct. We do not know whether Berchem himself ever visited Italy, and in works such as this he may well have followed the example of sketches or paintings by fellow artists who had been to Italy.
