An Elderly Man as Saint Paul

The book and sword, symbolising the word of God and the saint's martyrdom, identify the figure as Paul. The roundel at top left shows the Old Testament story of Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac, which Paul cited in his writings as an example of faith. Rembrandt seems to have been particularly fascinated by Paul, depicting him in several paintings.
