Lastman was the leading painter of biblical and mythological subjects in Amsterdam. Rembrandt studied with him when he arrived in the city. This work shows the holy family when they were forced to flee to Egypt, after Joseph was warned in a dream that Herod wanted to kill the Christ Child (Matthew 2: 13-15).
