Vanitas Still Life

Vibrant colours notwithstanding, the objects in this still life are intended to remind the viewer of the inevitability of death and the futility of human ambition. They include a skull wreathed in straw, an hourglass, an extinguished pipe, and musical instruments. The title page of a play published in 1618 translates as: 'Evil is its own reward'.
