Samson and Delilah

Delilah cuts Samson's hair as he sleeps with his head in her lap. She had discovered this would deprive the hero of his strength. This Old Testament story was sometimes seen as an example of women's treachery. The painting imitates ancient Roman relief sculpture. The boldly patterned marble background suggests the dawn sky.
