La Madonna della Rondine (The Madonna of the Swallow)

This altarpiece represents the Virgin and Child enthroned with saints Jerome and Sebastian, but it is named after the rondine (swallow) perched above, a symbol of the Resurrection. The work was commissioned for the church of San Francesco in Matelica.

Represented in the predella (the tier below the altarpiece) are Saint Jerome in the Wilderness, the Nativity and the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. These scenes are flanked by Saint Catherine, with the wheel on which she was martyred, and Saint George in combat with the dragon.
