The Virgin and Child Enthroned

On the sides of the throne are tablets inscribed in Hebrew with the Ten Commandments. The throne is crowned with the symbols of the four evangelists: an angel (Matthew), a winged lion (Mark), a winged ox (Luke) and an eagle (John).

This is the central part of an altarpiece from the Roverella family chapel in San Giorgio fuori le mura, Ferrara. One of the flanking panels showed the patron knocking for admission to the central vaulted space. The Latin lines on the side of the organ in the foreground implore the Christ Child to wake up and open the door for him. The angels are making music to waken Christ.
