The Virgin Annunciate

The Virgin is shown startled from her reading at the approach of the Archangel Gabriel, who would have been depicted on a matching panel. The pair would have formed the pinnacles of an altarpiece. This painting has been cut. Only the legs and tails of the sphinxes crowning the Virgin's throne are now visible.
