The Crucifixion

Christ, on the cross, is being offered vinegar to quench his thirst. On his right is the good thief, whose soul is being carried to heaven by angels. Devils hold a brazier with burning coals over the head of the bad thief on Christ's left. Below, the mourning Virgin is supported by Mary Magdalene (in red), the Three Maries and John the Evangelist. On the left soldiers cast lots for Christ's garment, and on the right are Roman soldiers and Jewish elders. The predella panel below the main part of the altarpiece shows the Virgin and Child with saints.

This panel appears to be the work of at least two artists, the softer style identifiable as that of Jacopo di Cione. The frame with its starred canopy and pilasters is original.
