With this work, Titian created the prototype of Venetian marriage paintings. The husband and wife are disguised as Mars and Venus,
the Roman gods of war and love. They are accompanied by the protective deities of marriage: Cupid carrying arrows, Vesta crowned with myrtle, and Hymen holding a basket of fruit.
Titien crée dans cette œuvre le prototype du tableau de mariage vénitien. Les époux sont travestis en Mars et Vénus, dieux romains de la guerre et de l'amour. Ils sont accompagnés des divinités protectrices du mariage: Cupidon portant des flèches, Vesta couronnée de myrte, Hymen tendant une corbeille de fruits.
