This painting, made for Cardinal Giulio Rospigliosi (1600-1669), future Pope Clement IX, celebrates the end of the plague in Rome, in 1657, thanks to the intercession of the Virgin. Mary, borne on a cloud, appears to Saint Frances and holds broken arrows in her hand, a symbol of the eradicated disease.
