In his first self-portrait, Dürer, with a proud demeanour and intense gaze, already shows masterful skill, notably in his rendering of textiles. The thistle, a symbol of fidelity, may be an allusion to his upcoming marriage, but the thorns are also a reference to the crown of Christ.
