Die Gestaltung des Bildes ist ungewöhnlich, der Blick wird durch einen starken Pfeiler verstellt. In der Ruine eines Palastes knien Maria und Joseph vor dem Neugeborenen, das von Engeln umsorgt wird; ein unwirkliches Licht geht von ihm aus. In der Ferne verkündet der Engel den Hirten die Frohe Botschaft. Die Kühle der Farben und die Schärfe der Zeichnung sind charakteristisch für die Arbeiten des Künstlers, der das Thema auch auf dem Freiburger Hochaltar als >Nachtstück behandelt hat.

The structure of this picture is unconventional with the view obstructed by a thick pillar. Mary and Joseph are kneeling in the ruins of a palace in front of the new-born child that is being looked after by angels; he radiates a surreal light. In the distance, an angel brings the shepherds the good tidings. The cool colouration and the clarity of the drawing are characteristic of works by the artist, who also painted this subject as a nocturnal scene for the high altar in Freiburg.
