Angesichts der sozialen und politischen Unruhen im postrevolutionären Paris zog sich Delacroix im September 1848 in sein Landhaus in Champrosay zurück. Dort fertigte er eine Reihe von Blumengemälden für den Salon von 1849 an, von denen er hoffte, dass sie die Vielfalt und Fülle des Gartens einfangen würden Blumen. Da Frost möglich war, arbeitete er schnell und fertigte fünf Leinwände an.
