Die mystische Vermählung der hl. Katharina

Der Venezianer Lorenzo Lotto entwickelte eine sehr eigenwillige Bildsprache und suchte unkonventionelle ikonografische Lösungen. Dargestellt ist eine Vision der heiligen Katharina von Alexandria. Auf der Suche nach einem passenden Ehemann, der ihr an Stand, Vermögen und Intellekt entsprechen sollte, präsentierte ihr ein Eremit eine Darstellung der Maria mit Kind und schlug ihr Christus als Gemahl vor. In einem Traum steckte der Christusknabe Katharina daraufhin als Zeichen der mystischen Vermählung einen Ring an den Finger.

The Venetian Lorenzo Lotto developed a very idiosyncratic pictorial language of his own and sought unconventional iconographic solutions. This work shows a vision of St Catherine of Alexandria.. While on the lookout for a suitable husband who could equal her status, wealth and intellect, a hermit presented her with a picture of the Virgin and Child and suggested Christ as her spouse. In a dream, the Christ Child thereupon placed a ring on Catherine's finger as a sign of the mystical marriage.
