Next in line after Straub and Günther, Roman Anton Boos became Munich's leading sculptor around 1780. Turning away from the rococo he aspired to a new monumentality based on classical sculpture. This characterises the cycle of figures showing the Labours of Hercules for the arcades of the Munich Hofgarten completed in 1781. These terracotta models for the larger than-life works in wood now in the Munich Residenz are executed with great exactitude and precision.
