A Regatta on the Grand Canal
One of the great Venetian spectacles was the annual carnival regatta. Prominent families lavishly decorated their boats for the occasion. Several figures wear the white mask and black cape associated with the carnival. Like its pair nearby, the frame was made to suit the mid-18th-century English interior for which the work was painted.
